Step 1: Starting the Test

Students see their student dashboard when they first log in:

Any available assessments are visible on this screen. A blank screen indicates there are no assessments assigned to the student.

When the student is ready to take an assessment, they should:

  1. Click the Take Assessment button located to the right of the assessment name. A new screen appears.
  2. Click the Start button when they are ready to begin the assessment.

The enCASE Kiosk Experience

If a student is taking an assessment for which enCASE Kiosk is required (for secured testing), students see a padlock icon on the Take Assessment button:

When a student clicks the Take Assessment button, the assessment opens in a secure window to prevent digital cheating. Other details on the enCASE Kiosk experience are available in Using enCASE Kiosk for Secure Testing

Step 2: Taking the Test

Once a student begins the test, items appear on the left side of the page and item numbers on the right.

Items with passages display the passage on the left:

Timed Tests

Some assessments may have a time limit. In this case, students see the elapsed time:

Basic Actions

Answering - Students should supply responses for each item. Once an item has been answered, the item number on the right changes from white to gray.

Note: Student answers are saved every 30 seconds. 

Navigating - After answering an item (or if they need to skip an item), students can click the blue Next button at the bottom right of the screen. Students can return to a previous item using the left arrow button.

Note: If the assessment contains multiple sections, the student cannot go back to any items in a previous section. However, they are allowed to review the items in a section before proceeding to the next section. For more information, see Reviewing, below.

Pausing - Students can pause their assessment using the Pause button: 

This pauses the test temporarily, but prevents students from accessing it.

If this test has a time limit, the timer is paused. Students can click Resume when ready to start again. (Students should click logout (accessible under their name in the top right-hand corner of the screen) before they completely close their browser window.)

Calculator

Items in some sections may display a Desmos Calculator button in the upper-right corner:

Notes:

  • The Desmos calculator may take several moments to load completely. Students should wait for it to load completely.
  • Some items may also have another style of calculator directly on the items. However, students should use the Desmos calculator.

Options Menu

Students may click on the Options Menu icon (located in the upper-right corner) to access other options: 

Options may include the following:

  • Full Screen - The assessment expands to occupy the entire screen.
  • Notepad - A small dialog appears where students may enter notes to themselves. This dialog stays visible for the entire assessment. 

Students may use the Notepad controls in the following ways:

  • To minimize the Notepad, click the Collapse icon [1].
  • To make the Notepad full screen, click the Maximize icon [2].
  • To hide the Notepad, click the Hide icon [3] or click the Notepad option from the menu again. Note: When the Notepad is hidden, notes are retained.
  • To move the Notepad, hover the cursor over the top title until the move control icon appears [4]. Then click and drag.  
  • To resize the Notepad, hover the cursor over the lower right corner until the double-headed arrow icon appears [5]. Then click and drag.
  • Add sticky note - A small dialog appears where students may enter notes to themselves about an item. These are visible only on the item that is active when students click Add sticky note. There may be more than one sticky note per item.

Students may use the sticky note controls in the following ways:

  • To remove a sticky note, click the Delete icon [1].
  • To minimize a sticky note, click the Resize icon [2].
  • To move the sticky note, hover the cursor over the top title until the Move icon appears [3]. Then click and drag.
  • To resize the sticky note, students may hover the cursor over the lower right corner until the Resize icon appears [4]. Then click and drag.
  • To hide all sticky notes, select Hide sticky notes from the Options Menu. Select Show sticky notes to make them visible again.
  • Drawing mode - Toggles drawing mode on and off. When turned on, drawing mode allows a student to click and drag in a grid-lined space of the screen to create or edit lines/shapes:

Students may click the drawing control icons to do any of the following:

  • Pencil [1] - draw
  • Erase [2] - remove a selected line
  • Select color [3] - select blue, red, green, or black
  • Hide grid [4] - toggle grid lines off and on
  • Exit drawing mode [5] - hide grid lines and controls but keeps drawings visible; alternatively, choose Drawing mode from the Options Menu again.

After a student creates a drawing, the following options appear on the Options Menu: Hide drawings (eliminates visible drawings) and Show drawings (makes hidden drawings visible).

  • Response Masking - enters a mode that allows the student to visually mask/strikeout answer choices they want to rule out. This helps narrow the number of answer choices so they can more easily identify the correct answer. Students click on answer choices to "mask" them. For example, the response of "cardinal", below, is masked:
  • Flag Item marks an item as one the student may want to revisit. When a student reaches the end of a section or test, the Review page shows flagged items, so a student remembers to go back if they wish.
  • Text-to-Speech hides the text-to-speech bar. (Refer to the section below for more on text-to-speech functionality.)

Constructed Response Items

Some assessments may include constructed response items that require entering several lines of text. Students may answer online in the space provided. For example:

All options described in the previous section are available to students on constructed response items.

Tip: Students may write answers to constructed response items on paper, rather than online. However, if the teacher wants to enter scores for these items in enCASE, students must enter something in the answer space online, such as their initials, or their names, or a phrase such as "see paper". This allows teachers to grade constructed response items in enCASE.

Text-to-Speech

Students requiring the accommodation will have text-to-speech enabled, which allows them to view a text-to-speech toolbar on their assessments:

Students can hide or display the toolbar by clicking the Options Menu [1] and selecting the Text-to-Speech link [2]:

Assessment Proctoring

Some assessments allow teachers or other proctors to monitor testing while the testing window is open. The proctor can see which students have or have not started the assessment, which have completed it, and what item each student is viewing. Students are not aware of the proctoring, unless a proctor uses proctoring actions to remotely control the student experience. For example, a proctor might pause the testing or submit an assessment for a student and the student is alerted. For example:

Step 3: Reviewing

At the end of a section and at the end of the entire assessment (prior to completion), a Review button appears. For example:

When the student clicks the Review button, the Review page shows all the items in the section or test. Any items for which the student gave no response are considered "unattempted" and are shown in white. For example:

Note: If the assessment has multiple sections, the Review page shows only items in the current section.

Students may click on any item to go back to it, or they may click the check box next to "Unattempted" to see only the unattempted items. However, they cannot go back to items in any previous sections.

If a student is taking an assessment with multiple sections, they should review their answers, and then click the Next button. A warning appears:

If a student still needs to review answers in the current section, they may click the Cancel button. Or if they are ready to move to the items in the next section, they may click the Continue button. 

Step 4: Finishing and Submitting

If the student has reached the end of the test and the final review page, they should review items as needed and click the Finish button.

A submission dialog appears:

At this point the student can either:

  • Go back to the assessment by clicking the No button 
  • Submit their assessment for grading by clicking the Yes button. A message indicates that their answers have been submitted, and they can click the Close button.

If the assessment has a time limit, students may submit at any time, but when they reach the time limit, they are forced to submit.

Failure to Submit: Student answers are saved every 30 seconds to ensure they do not lose any responses if they leave the assessment, close the window, or become disconnected. A student who does not click Submit is recorded on reports as "unsubmitted" but tested. The student may continue the test at any time by logging in again within the testing window. They will be able to see previous responses, make changes, and continue. (In the case of an assessment containing multiple sections, when a student logs back in they will return to the last section in which they were working.) 

Submitting Prematurely: If a student submits their assessment prematurely, you may reopen it or mark it for a retake. Review Reopening or Retaking an Assessment for details.

Step 5: Reviewing Scored Results

Some classroom assessments may have been scheduled to allow students to see their results (and optionally the correct answers) after they have submitted and completed the assessment. If this is the case, the Student Results Page appears after the student submits the assessment. At the top, it shows an overall percent correct and how each item was scored. For example:

If students are also allowed to see correct answers, the lower part of the Student Results Page displays the test so students may navigate through and look at their answers, including the correct answers for items they scored incorrectly:

Step 6: Logging Out

A student should log out of enCASE by clicking on the down arrow next to their name in the upper-right part of the screen and choosing Logout from the drop-down menu.
