Adding Alignments

While in the Item Editor, you can align an item to curriculum standards or to supplemental metadata (e.g., Bloom's Taxonomy, Depth of Knowledge, Difficulty, and other taxonomies such as MI Verbal Reasoning and Smarter Balanced Difficulty). As you align items to curriculum standards, you can also specify the type of method used for the alignment. See “Specifying an Alignment Method (optional)," below, for more details.

You can also specify curriculum standards to which the item does NOT align.

Aligning an Item

You can align an item to a standard or supplemental metadata while in the item editor. In the sidebar Alignments section, click the Edit option.

In the Item Alignments dialogue box, select the Search/Add Stds. tab.

Select the standards to which you want this item aligned:

  • Click Select Curriculum [1] and choose a publication or metadata such as Bloom's Taxonomy, Difficulty, or Depth of Knowledge.
  • Click Select Subject/Revision [2] (if applicable) and choose a document. Some documents have the same name but were released on different dates and contain different information. Be sure to choose the document with the date you want.
  • Click Select Course [3] and choose a course or grade.

Locate the standard(s) to select. Scroll through the document or to select a particular standard, use the JUMP TO STANDARD section [4] so that it becomes highlighted and you can see it.

Once you locate the standard, click the checkbox on the right side of the standard.

Any selected standards then appear on the Standards tab and are labeled, WILL ADD. This label indicates that you have not yet saved the alignments, but once you do, these will be added.

When you are finished selecting standards to add, review the contents on the Standards tab to make sure the standards you want to add are the ones that say WILL ADD. If so, click Save Alignment. The standards are added.

To cancel the addition of any alignments that say WILL ADD, click on the X to the right.

Note: While it is common to align an item to only one standard per publication, ItemLogic does not prevent you from selecting multiple. The best practice is to choose the deepest standard that applies to the item.

Specifying an Alignment Method

When you add alignments, you may want to indicate how the alignments were determined. 

To specify the method used for determining an alignment, click Edit from the “Alignments” section located on the left sidebar of the item editor.

On the Standards tab, click on the Method drop-down menu and select Verified or Not Verified. Choose Verified if you used an automated way of determining the alignment and it does not require verification. Choose Not Verified if you may need to confirm this alignment at some point.

After specifying an alignment method, click Save Alignments.

Specifying Non-Applicable Curriculum - Exclusions

If you know that an item does not align to any standards in a particular curriculum, you can capture that as part of the alignment information. Itemlogic allows you specify any non-applicable curriculum as an exclusion. This provides evidence that alignment work was done, and it was discovered that no alignment exists to the standards in the curriculum.

To add a curriculum as an exclusion, click Edit from the “Alignments” section located on the left sidebar of the item editor.

Select the Exclusions tab, located on the far right of the Item Alignments dialog box.

Choose from the Filter CurriculumFilter Subject, and Filter Course drop-down menus to indicate a curriculum as an exclusion. 

Click Add Exclusion. The curriculum appears at the bottom of the window with the label "WILL ADD" (indicating that this is not yet saved).

Add additional exclusions as needed.

When you finish, click Save Alignments. All exclusions that were labeled "WILL ADD" are now saved.

The item editor Alignments section shows aligned and active standards as well as any exclusions. To view the standard, click on the Standard link [1]. To view exclusions, click the Exclusions link [2]. For more information on alignment codes, refer to Understanding Alignment Codes.

To make changes to either standards or exclusions, click the Edit link.

Removing a Standard

Next to the standard or exclusion, click the Remove icon [1].

The standard or exclusion receives a WILL REMOVE label to indicate that the change is not yet saved. To restore the standard or exclusion, click the Remove icon again.

Handling Alignments to Deleted Standards

Alignment data is updated periodically in ItemLogic to reflect changes made by standards authorities. Sometimes this process deletes a particular standard because it was removed by the authority. When this happens, ItemLogic maintains your alignments to the deleted standards, but it moves them from the Standards tab to the Deleted Standards tab. 

To view alignments to deleted standards, click the Edit button [1]. Then click the Deleted Standards tab [2].

Alignments to deleted standards are not considered active and do not appear in places where alignments are shown. They are also not included in any alignment counts. For example, only active standards are shown when searching in the Items list [1] or when viewing the Alignments and the total alignment counts in the item editor [2].
