Matrix

Updated Mar 24, 2021

Selected Response Matrix interaction presents a set of selected response choice elements for one or more rows. The candidate's task is to select one or more choices for each row present in the matrix. The interaction is always initialized with no choices selected.

Example

Creating an Matrix Interaction

  1. In the item editor, add a Selected Response Matrix interaction type.
  2. Add content to your stem prompt (ex: "Several expressions are shown below...").

Adding Content to the Matrix

  1. Define the column values in the field labeled "Column Values" [1]. These values will appear at the top of the matrix. Note: Typing the letter "A", "B", etc is not required or recommended.
  2. Next, define the rows you wish the candidate to evaluate. The first row is rendered for you when you first create the interaction (displayed below as Row 1). For each row, enter the content [2] and click Add Text. Then select the correct response for that content [3] by clicking on the key. (Options for [3] will not be shown if you have not yet defined any column values.)
  3. Add additional rows by clicking the plus sign [4]. Remove matrix rows by clicking on the trash icon next the desired row.

Customizing the Matrix

To allow the candidate to select multiple cells in a matrix interaction for each row, click Customize and select Allow Multiple Keys. This converts the radio input buttons to check boxes.

If you want to change the item so that the rows become the columns and the columns become the rows:

1 Click Swap Rows/Cols.
2 A message warns that you will need to re-indicate the correct responses.

Click Submit
The values that were the columns are now the rows.
3 Indicate the correct response for each row. For example:

(Use Customize to allow multiple keys if necessary, as in this example.)
4 Preview the item to verify that the rows and columns were swapped.
