An Associate interaction presents a single pool of tokens that must correctly paired. The candidate drags tokens into the match interface to create logical pairings between the tokens.
Note: ItemLogic also supports graphic and equation-based tokens.
Why Not Create an Match Interaction?
In an Associate interaction, we are pairing the same type of object so only a single token pool is necessary. Match interactions are recommended only if the tokens being paired are two distinct kinds of objects (ex: pairing a "character" to the "play" in which they are featured). For information on pairing two distinct objects where two token pools are used, see Match interactions.
You may technically use an Associate interaction for multiple object types. In fact, this would increase the rigor of the item, as Associate interactions do not provide any hinting as to the correct pairings of the tokens provided. (With Match interactions, it is clear that a token from one pool must be paired with a token from another pool.)
Creating an Associate Interaction
- In the item editor, click the plus sign and click Stem. This displays the Select Interaction Type window.
- Click the Match tab to reveal match-based interaction types.
- Select Associate, then click Create Interaction.
- Add content to your stem prompt (ex: "Hidden in this list of characters from famous Shakespeare plays are three pairs of rivals ...").
Next, add tokens to the field labeled "Associable Tokens". For this example, enter "Antonio" , then click Add Text . The token will become listed similar to . Repeat the process to add the remaining tokens. Ensure each token has its own label (T1, T2, T3, ...).
Tip: You can quickly add tokens with key strokes: Enter the token name, then press [TAB] and then [ENTER].
Defining Token Usage
By default, each token can be used an unlimited number of times. If you want to set a Min and Max number of times a token can be used, click the Match Limits icon [4, above] to open the Edit Match Limits dialog.
Enter the number of times the token MUST be used in the Min Uses field (default is 0).
Enter the most number of times the token can be used into the Max Uses field (default is infinite).
Creating Token Pairs
Finally, you need to define which tokens pairs will be scored. By default, all pairs not listed in the "Scored Associations" field will receive a score of -1.
To create a token pairs:
- Click the Plus icon . This will create a blank source/destination interface.
- Click the source placeholder .
- Then select the token number from the list .
Repeat the process until your editor looks like this:
