Managing Item Translations

When you translate an item into other languages, you create secondary items, which you can link to the primary item (the original item) using the Translations field. When you link a secondary item to the primary item, the primary item’s non-content information (e.g. metadata, properties, and alignments) becomes associated with the secondary items. When you edit the primary item’s non-content information, those edits are reflected in the linked secondary items.

To link multiple items, you may import translation items from a file, indicating which item is the primary item.

Item translation information also publishes as QTI and to other platforms.

Note: When you create an item, the Language/Locale property is set to EN (English) in the US (United States) by default. To choose a different language, click the Edit button in the Language/Locale property section and select another language/locale.

Adding Secondary Items as Translations

To identify items as translated versions (ie. secondary items) of a primary item, open the primary item (usually the English item) for editing.

Note: If you are editing a published item, you may check out and edit, or unlock and edit. 

Click the Edit button in the Translations section in the left sidebar.

The Translations dialog box appears:

Enter the Item ID or Vendor ID of a secondary item [1] and press [Enter] or click the magnifying glass icon [2]. Select an item [3] from those that appear.

Note: You cannot add an item as a translation if it is a primary item (ie. it has translations), or if it is a translation on another item.

A message warns you that once you add the item as a translation, it becomes a linked, secondary item, and you may only edit non-content properties, metadata, and alignments in the primary item.

Click OK to confirm and continue. The item is listed in the Translations dialog box:

Click Close

Linking the Items

The final step in linking the primary item to the secondary translations is to leave the editor. 

Click the Leave Editor icon:

Choose any of the options that appear.

The primary item and the translation items are now linked, and the following metadata propagate from the primary item to the secondary item(s):

  • Tools
  • Devices
  • Subject
  • Grade Levels
  • Keywords
  • Alignments
  • Tags

Viewing the Translations

The translation item(s) appear in the Translations section of the primary item:

Editing the Primary Item

Once you add an item as a translation, the non-content (metadata, tags, and alignments) for that item are controlled through the Primary item. This information on the translation item is read-only. 

To edit non-content information that is captured on both the primary item its translations, edit the primary item. (Refer to Editing a Published Item if the Primary item is already published.) After you save the changes on the Primary item, the system applies the changes to the translation items as well.

Notes

  • As you edit a primary item, its publication status may change, but the status of the translation items does not change.
  • If a translation item is published and you make changes to the primary item, the translation item is re-published.

Editing the Secondary Items

You may only edit a secondary translation item's content information (item stem and responses, correct answer information, contexts, and rationales). You must edit all other non-content related information (metadata, alignments, and tags) in the primary item. A warning about this appears at the top of a translation item when you open it for editing:

Removing Translations

To remove a translation from a primary item, click the Edit button in the Translations section.

Click the trash can icon next to the item(s) you want to remove.

Click the Submit button.

The items are no longer linked by translation. You may now edit the non-content as well as content information in items that are no longer translations.

Importing Item Translations

You may import item translations by indicating the associated primary item by populating one of the following columns in the import file:

  • Translations-Primary-ItemID
  • Translations-Primary-GUID
  • Translations-Primary-VendorID

Note: Since item translations are secondary items, import only information required for the translation: ItemVendorID, ItemType, Stem, Choice[A-Z], Answer, Rationale[A-Z], Language, and a corresponding Locale. All other non-content information propagates from the primary item after the item translation imports. Refer to Valid Language and Locale Codes for importing items.

Publishing Translation Information

The translation relationship information among items exports as QTI and publishes to partner platforms such as Learnosity. Translations are conveyed in the QTI in the following fields of the primary item:
